Evaluation Services for Children & Adolescents

Cedar Counseling & Wellness provides neurodiverse-affirming ADHD evaluation services for children and adolescents (ages 6-17). **If you are looking for evaluations for adults, please navigate here

We believe in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that celebrates the unique strengths and perspectives of every child or adolescent we serve. Our approach recognizes that ADHD is not a deficit but rather a variation of the human brain, offering its own set of advantages and challenges. We aim to create a space where individuals feel understood, accepted, and empowered to embrace their unique identities, characteristics, and capabilities.

Parents and caregivers may seek our services for various reasons. Some may be looking for answers to understand their child’s behavior and learning patterns better. Others may be seeking support in managing the academic and social stressors that often accompany ADHD. Regardless of the specific motivation, our goal remains consistent: to provide comprehensive evaluations that empower families with knowledge and guidance for navigating the journey ahead.

Would your child/adolescent benefit from evaluation services at Cedar Counseling & Wellness?

Our evaluation services are designed for the following individuals:

  • Those Seeking a Strengths-Based, Non-judgmental Approach: Our evaluations are designed and conducted by clinicians with both professional and personal lived experience with neurodivergence. We foster a safe and inclusive environment where ADHD evaluation is embraced as a positive journey of self-discovery
  • Academic Challenges: Children and adolescents with ADHD often encounter difficulties meeting the social and academic expectations at school. An evaluation can serve as a crucial first step toward identifying and effectively managing these challenges.
  • Executive Functioning Challenges: Your child may shine in certain areas, but have difficulty with executive functioning (inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, disorganization, challenges with transitions, and/or emotional dysregulation).
  • Family History of ADHD: A family history of ADHD may suggest a potential genetic predisposition. Understanding familial patterns can provide valuable insights into individual experiences.
  • Seeking a Second Opinion: If your child has had a prior evaluation that left you with unresolved questions/concerns, a second opinion may offer fresh perspectives and potentially address any lingering uncertainties.

**Please note that if you are seeking school accommodations, we recommend reaching out directly to your child’s school. While we strive to offer thorough evaluations, we cannot guarantee that our assessment will meet your child’s school’s requirements for accommodations.

Evaluation Process

Typically, our process includes a consultation, clinical interview, test administration, records review, and feedback session. We are committed to tailoring our evaluation process to your unique needs.

Consultation

During the phone or virtual (audio/video) consultation with the parent(s), we will learn more about your goals for an evaluation to ensure that our services would be the right fit for you. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any specific questions regarding the process or procedures.

Clinical Interview

During the clinical interview, we gather insights from the parents regarding the child’s daily experiences, family dynamics, school history, and general background. If applicable, we conduct an interview with the child/adolescent to gain firsthand insight into their experiences and internal processes.

Test Administration

Test materials will be provided to parents and the child/adolescent via email for completion between the initial interviews and the feedback session. We use a combination of assessment tools, including the Behavior Assessment System for Children – Third Edition (BASC-3), Conners 4th Edition, the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale – Parent Report (WFIRS-P), and the Guare Executive Skills Questionnaire.

Records Review/ Report Writing

After the completion of the consultation, clinical interviews, and test administration, your clinician will review your scores, records, and develop a written report with a diagnosis.

Feedback Session

The evaluator, parents, and child will meet to discuss the findings, diagnosis, and recommendations. This session also allows for feedback and an opportunity to address any questions or concerns.

Session Breakdown

Below is what a typical breakdown of testing looks like.

Consultation (30 minutes)

Clinical Interview (90 minutes): Interview with parents (45-60 minutes) and child/adolescent (20-30 minutes).

Feedback Session (45-50 minutes): We will discuss the findings, diagnosis, and recommendations. This is a collaborative process and we are open to hearing your thoughts and feedback before finalizing your report.

Please note, the testing time whether you are receiving a full or summarized report is the same, the only difference is the amount of detail the clinician provides in the written report.
